Pioneer DJ began as the DJ equipment business of Pioneer Corporation, which released the first CDJ, the CDJ-500, in 1994. Its CDJ players and DJM mixers became fixtures of club booths, and rekordbox, its music management software, prepares the cue points, loops and beat grids those players read from USB and SD media. In 2014 Pioneer agreed to sell most of the DJ business to the investment firm KKR, and Pioneer DJ Corporation became an independent company in 2015. It renamed itself AlphaTheta Corporation on 1 January 2020 while keeping the Pioneer DJ brand, and in January 2024 it confirmed that new products would also launch under the AlphaTheta name. That is why newer gear such as the CDJ-3000X carries AlphaTheta branding, while older players and their firmware, manuals and support now sit on AlphaTheta’s help centre alongside pioneerdj.com.
