Pioneer DJ PLX-500
The PLX-500 is a direct-drive turntable that Pioneer DJ launched in August 2016 for people starting out with vinyl or digitising a record collection, and it remains in the range in black and white. It borrows the PLX-1000’s layout but is a lighter, simpler deck: Pioneer quotes a starting torque above 1.6 kgf·cm and a start time within one second, against 4.5 kg·cm and 0.3 seconds on the PLX-1000, and the pitch control has a single ±8% range. In return it adds things the PLX-1000 lacks: a USB-B output for recording vinyl into the free rekordbox software as WAV files, a phono/line output switch so it can feed powered speakers directly, 78 rpm alongside 33⅓ and 45, and a dust cover with a stand for displaying record sleeves. It shipped with a slipmat and a silver PC-HS01-S headshell with a cartridge and stylus fitted. Pioneer pitches it for mixing and scratching too, including with rekordbox DVS and control vinyl, but if you plan to scratch seriously, the PLX-1000’s higher torque and wider pitch ranges are the reason to step up.
