Technics SL-1200MK2
The SL-1200MK2 is the deck most DJ setups were built around for three decades. Technics released it in the summer of 1979 as an update to the 1972 SL-1200, adding quartz-locked speed control and replacing the original rotary pitch knob with the long slider DJs use to beatmatch. Technics describes it as the first turntable designed around DJ use in discos and clubs, with an aluminium die-cast top, a moulded rubber base and four large insulator feet to resist feedback at high volume. Pitch runs ±8% around a quartz-locked zero, and a lit strobe on the platter edge lets you read speed by eye. The MK2 stayed in production until Panasonic discontinued its analog turntables in 2010, so units span roughly thirty years of manufacture, and very early ones have a larger plate where the phono and ground leads leave the chassis. Compared with the later MK3D and MK5 it has no pitch reset button and keeps the click at zero on the pitch slider; compared with the MK7 it has hard-wired phono and ground leads and no reverse play. It suits anyone who wants the reference vinyl deck and is happy to buy on condition rather than age.

- Ask for a video of the platter starting, running at 33 and 45 and stopping, so you can see it reach speed quickly and brake cleanly.
- Check that the strobe dots stand still with the pitch slider at zero and drift smoothly as the slider moves.
- Move the pitch slider end to end and listen for crackle, dead spots or sudden jumps in speed.
- Grip the tonearm near the pivot and feel for side-to-side play, which points to loose or worn bearings.
- Turn the arm-height ring through its range and confirm it locks, and check that the counterweight and anti-skate dial turn freely.
- Wiggle the hard-wired phono and ground leads while a record plays and listen for hum or dropouts, since replacing them means opening the deck.
- Look for a region code next to the model number on the serial label and for a voltage switch under the platter, which mark an export unit rather than a US 120 V model.
- Check that the pop-up stylus light rises and lights.

274 SL-1200MK2s are listed, one for parts, and most ask $750–975 delivered. Ask for a video of start-up and braking at 33 and 45 with the strobe dots standing still at zero pitch, run the pitch slider end to end for crackle or jumps, and feel for play at the tonearm pivot. Check the serial label for a region code and look for a voltage switch under the platter, which mark an export unit rather than a US 120 V deck. The best buys are tested decks at about $651 and $768 delivered, or about $900 with the dust cover; skip a $1,264 ask on a title two sellers share.

Cartridge, slipmat and setup
Budget for a fresh stylus or cartridge with any used SL-1200MK2: a worn stylus damages records. Slipmats, a stylus-force gauge and a spare headshell make setup easier.
